Neighborhood Effects on Seedling Recruitment

Question:
Does the presence of pre-existing vegetation affect the growth or survival of newly establishing seedlings?

Why do we care?
The filters that limit seedling establishent affect seedling recruitment. Seedling recruitment provides the template for all future patterns of tree growth and survival.

Approach:
Monitor one-meter-square plots in which all woody plants greater than 10 cm in height are individually tagged and identified. Estimate the percent cover of all understory arecaceae, cyclanthaceae, heliconiaceae, and marantaceae. Regress seedling growth on percent covers, and on the density of seedlings. In a logistic regression, compare the survival of seedlings against percent cover, and against the density of seedlings.
